Developing a Training Procedures Manual

The 1st U.S. Marine Corps Division was intent on improving its ability to fill formal school seats and its ammunition requisition process. Confusion reigned when it came to scheduling firing range sessions; last minute requests and schedule changes made it difficult to coordinate sessions for the multiple organizations using the range.

The guidelines for developing schedules, submitting applications for formal school seats, and ordering ammunition were buried deep in the organizations standard operation procedures (SOP) manual for training. An analysis determined that the existing manual was difficult to use and, therefore, people chose not to use it.

The intervention consisted of developing a new, structured, modular SOP. After the procedure manual was revised, it was used and the organizations performance goals were realized. [Download PDF]
