Twentysomethings in Training
The younger workers who will assume the leadership roles left
vacant by retiring baby boomers are independent, highly motivated
and educated, and technology savvy. They also have entirely
different work ethics and career expectations than their parents.
They crave challenge and aim to work faster and better than their
colleagues. At the same time, they expect to have a life outside
the office. To gain insight into this emerging segment of the
profession, T+D surveyed more than 450 young workplace learning and
performance professionals about their current work and future
aspirations. While their responses sync with prevailing notions
about generations X and Y, they also suggest that the attitudes and
goals of this generation and their younger siblings arent as black
and white as some experts would have us believe. Over the next 50
years, the U.S. workforce is projected to grow at approximately
one-third of its current overall rate. That means that younger
workers in the WLP field soon will reach management positions. And
the more that industry professionals know about this new group of
colleagues, the better equipped they will be to coexist with them.
But unlike some senior WLP professionals, many young practitioners
are carving out highly specialized niches for themselves from day
1.
