THE CERTIFIED COACH: A BRAND YOU SHOULD

While it will take decades for the coaching profession to attain the kind of esteem reserved for professions such as medicine, coaches are no longer just cheerleaders for executives needing a confidence boost or disciplinarians brought in to shape up a leader on the ropes. As the field’s professional standards are being raised, so too is the public’s knowledge about what a coach is hired to do. Soon it will no longer be sufficient to hang a sign on the office door declaring oneself a “coach.” The profession is demanding its practitioners prove they can do what they say. As yet there are no full degree programs dedicated to coaching, but many institutions offer certification. As professional standards evolve, the irony is that many individuals who are developing coaching curricula are not certified themselves. Virginia Bianco-Mathis, a professor at Marymount University in Virginia, teaches two courses on coaching. She developed the curriculum at George Washington University, which offers a coaching certificate program. While she possesses substantial experience in the field, she is not certified.
