ASTD estimates that U.S. organizations spent $134.1 billion
on employee learning and development in 2008. Nearly two-thirds of
the U.S. total ($88.6 billion) was spent on the internal learning
function, such as staff salaries and internal development costs.
The remainder ($45.6 billion) was allocated to external services
such as workshops, vendors and external events.
These types of informative statistics appear in ASTDs annual
State of the Industry Report. The report is ASTDs
annual review of trends in workplace learning and performance and
includes data from ASTD BEST Awards Winners, ASTD Benchmarking
